What We Do
We collaborate with government agencies and research institutions to create new services and promote digital transformation (DX). Code for Japan includes a diverse group of consultants, engineers, and designers from ministries and municipalities. Instead of providing one-sided advice, we aim to create unique value by thinking and building together on-site.
How We Do
Code for Japan aims to openly share the results of facing challenges on-site, extending the benefits to many regions, rather than keeping them within a single organization.
Services
Municipal DX
Code for Japan's municipal DX, which involves working alongside officials, has the following features:
- Interviews and dialogue with stakeholders based on municipal field experience
- Service design and business organization from a citizen perspective, constructing new business flows using digital tools
- Project-based BPR and data utilization training themed on real business operations
We have promoted DX with various municipalities, from prefectures and designated cities to small municipalities. We provide practical workshops through prototyping and real business operations, rather than one-sided lectures or advice.
Regional DX
The focus on DX to enrich residents' lives is increasing. In Toyooka City, we conducted a demonstration experiment for a no-code/low-code communication tool to reduce the workload of neighborhood association leaders and facilitate "time and location-independent" communication for local residents, accompanying it to commercialization. We also conduct citizen participation workshops and other activities tailored to regional circumstances and needs.
Open Data
Since its establishment, Code for Japan has been promoting open data initiatives. We support municipalities that have not yet engaged in open data and conduct a wide range of activities, including citizen participation workshops.
Open Source Software
Code for Japan develops open source software (OSS) for government agencies. For the Tokyo Metropolitan Government COVID-19 Task Force site, we published the source code on GitHub along with the website, spreading the code to over 60 regions. We also accepted pull requests from civic engineers, receiving the Good Design Award Gold Prize for this innovative approach.
Research
We conduct research on various themes such as smart cities, open data, and agile development. Our team consists of practitioners, including municipal officials, engineers, and researchers, who create practical reports and develop prototypes.
Open Science
We develop prototypes and conduct research in collaboration with research institutions. By having engineers and designers develop from a long-term perspective, we aim to implement research results in society.
