International Collaboration / Global Community

What is Facing the Ocean?

Facing the Ocean (FtO) is a community event where civic hackers from East Asia, facing the same ocean, gather together. Participants include g0v (Taiwan), Code for Korea and Parti (Korea), Code for Japan (Japan), and volunteers from neighboring countries. They share updates on civic tech activities and collaborate on projects with common themes.

Why Did We Start This Program?

Social Hack Day, held monthly by Code for Japan, was originally inspired by g0v's jothon (零時政府揪松團) in Taiwan. There has been ongoing information exchange through mutual participation in g0v summit and Code for Japan Summit. To further strengthen community collaboration, the concept started in 2018, and in 2019, members from g0v-intl (零時政府國際交流小組) worked towards holding the first event in Okinawa.

Past FtO Events

The first FtO event was held in Okinawa in June 2019, followed by another in Tainan in December 2019. Plans for a Jeju Island event were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to online meetings only.

This Year's FtO

This year, the FtO event will be held in Yokohama on August 17 and 18, 2024. Details are provided on Slack, so please register for Code for Japan's Slack.
